Edrin looked at the walls of obsidian that stood in the middle
of the dragon's chamber. The walls that sundered the being in
two. Gathering his internal strength he touched the walls with
his hand and shouted "Mortalus!"
It was the same command word that caused the artifact to grow
from a one inch cube to a 200' battle tower. Commanding the
tower in this fashion should cause it to shrink again and become
the one inch cube. Yet the tower remained. Whole. Unmoving.
Solid. Edrin nodded his head and backed away from the tower.
"What is wrong?" Tordek asked behind him.
"The dragon probably attacked the tower when it was sundered."
Edrin replied. "It was asleep, probably for four or five
hundred years. Suddenly it was being attacked so instinct took
over and it attacked the thing that caused it the most pain."
Edrin looked at the dwarf. "It is said that a blast from
these creatures can blow away all the magic in its path."
"What do you mean, blow away?" Tordek asked, holding
his axe a little tighter.
"I mean that instead of breathing fire or ice or acid,
these creatures breath a magic that destroys all other magic.
There is a spell that is something like it, used to destroy
cursed or evil objects. At least that is why the spell was created.
It is called 'Disjunction'. It separates the magic from the
item. The magic is sent back into the universe and the item
becomes a simple item. Used against powerful artifacts the spell
sometimes causes them to explode. The power held inside the
artifacts is just too much to simply dissipate."
"What about this tower? It seems like some powerful magic
to me" Tordek said, looking at the structure.
"I agree, and if I were to use a Disjunction spell on
such an artifact it would probably blow up in my face, killing
me and anyone else foolish enough to be around when it happened.
However, these dragons do not use magic as we know it. The type
of Disjunction they use is so powerful it rips the magic right
out of the object and disintegrates the power at the same time."
