There are a ton of pre-existing maps, available for your personal use. I’m not really sure about the use I’ll be using maps here on Scarn.com for — maps for the Scarred Lands Modules we are developing, even though most of them will be given away as downloads, … probably just have to notify and give credit… we’ll see.
Anyway, there are a ton of them. You can use the Customized Search Box to find, them… or you can use this list to find most of them.
AutoRealm — A fairly large are of some good maps ready for download
Dark Furies – Has a free map area, and a massive, fairly priced, library of pre-made maps
Western Realms — has a nice collection of maps used for that Realm
Map-A-Week from Wizards – yes, they are still doing this — and its been what? six years now… that is a lot of maps.
Fantasy Floorplans — a nice collection of every day map needs, like a tailor shop, sales area of a tavern, a pharmacy, a smithy… good things to have around, I’m glad I came across the place.
The Maelstrom Fantasy Campaign Setting area – I noticed some duplicates on there from other web sites — creators, but there were some worthy adds for the DM collection.
Fantasy Maps — Yeah.. that’s it.. Maps Laddies Maps! Arg..
Map Mage – Another good collection.
Muggee Dungeon Card and Board Sections -- This collection is as it says, dungeon cards and board sections, which are more for the Play session than the Module creation side of things.. but nice to have. They can make Game Time much better, and keep the story running.
Serious Cartography area
Historical Map Web Site Link Collection. — I should get in there and make a copy of all of these links, because this resource is on a University page, and those have a tendancy to disappear suddenly. It is a fantastic collection of historic maps available on the Internet. The David Rumsey collection itself is a major find. But you’ll find that what I said about University pages holds true in this list… many of the links are broken, and the collections unavailable… it happens a lot with Unvirsity links… which is a major bummer.
Why you would be interested in the Historical maps is fairly simple — because most people who start out trying to writing RPG games/campaigns/modules, do it backwards… and I’ll be talking about that in my next tip
